PURPOSE: A gadolinium phosphate green fluorescent substance and its preparation method are provided, which substance has an excellent emission luminance under the excitation source of 147 nm and an afterglow time of 2-6 ms suitable for a plasma display panel. CONSTITUTION: The gadolinium phosphate green fluorescent substance has a composition represented by Gd(1-x)(P(1-y)Nby)O4:Tbx, wherein 0.001=x=0.50, 0.005=y=0.30 and 0.8= (Gd+Tb)/(P+Nb)=1.1. The method comprises the steps of dissolving gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3), niobium oxide (Nb2O5), ammonium hydrogen phosphate ((NH4)2HPO4) and terbium oxide (Tb4O7) in nitric acid, HF, distilled water and nitric acid, respectively, to prepare precursor solutions; mixing the precursor solutions according to the above composition; drying the mixture at 50-150 deg.C; secondly drying the mixture at 400-600 deg.C; and calcining the mixture at 1,000-1,400 deg.C.
