In a copyright protection apparatus and method for various recording media such as a digital video disk, it is possible to use a video fingerprint signal and an authenticating signature so as to prevent a user from copying or copying, . Both the video fingerprint signal and the authentication signature are recorded on the medium only when copy protection is required. The authentication signature has the property that it is not transferred to an illegal copy made by a CD-writer. When a copy-protected or non-copy-protected original is reproduced, the presence or absence of an authentic signature causes the player to reproduce the program video correctly. All original DVDs are thus played back normally. When a replica of the non-copy-protected CD is reproduced, the absence of the video fingerprint signal causes the player to correctly reproduce the video signal data. However, when a copy-protected CD is reproduced, the absence of the authentication signature prevents the player from playing back the disc normally.
