Method and apparatus for detecting the motion of a subject from compressed data using a wavelet algorithm

PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for detecting motion of an object using wavelet compressed data are provided to reduce operation volume by judging the motion of the object by using wavelet compressed video data, thereby detecting the motion of the object in real time. CONSTITUTION: A plurality of difference detecting parts(52,...,52X) detects differences by comparing brightness and chromaticity of pixels of previous video data(50,...,50X) compressed in N,...,N-X steps, and current video data(51,...,51X) compressed in N,...,N-X steps. A motion judging part(53) compares the detected differences with a preliminarily set threshold value one by one to judge motion of an object, and outputs a motion judging signal according to the judgement.
