Digital signal processors selectively demodulate and decode signals received from various types of transmission channels, such as satellite, terrestrial and cable transmission channels. The received signal represents compressed digital video information, such as television picture information, and is encoded in one of a plurality of coding formats (eg, trellis or puncture codes of selectable code rates). The received signal is modulated in one of a plurality of modulation formats (eg, PAM, QAM, PSK). The demodulator selectively demodulates a signal modulated in one of the plurality of modulation formats and the decoder selectively decodes the demodulated signal coded in one of the plurality of coding formats.
