The earth monitoring circuit has a protection line (PE) electrically coupled to the neutral line (N) on the installation side, with the potential equalisation (PA) coupled to earth potential (E). Respective capacitors are inserted between the protection line and the neutral line and between the protection line and a phase line (L), for acting as a capacitive voltage divider. A monitoring element (N1) is controlled by the protection line via the capacitive voltage divider, for activating an alarm signal when a given threshold value is exceeded, with subsequent evaluation of the alarm signal.
