Method for positioning a liquid dispensing unit above a surface for which a liquid contact angle is to be determined. The position of the surface is automatically detected using a software program that evaluates images generated using a digital image processing system, based on an image analogue to digital converter, and controls the position of the dispensing unit accordingly. The program uses the emergence of a mirror image of the dispensing unit or the reduction in free space beneath the lower edge of the unit to control its position. The invention also relates to a corresponding apparatus for method implementation.
