A process for coating a material with an adhesive as it passes through an irradiation zone where the adhesive is thermally activated, comprises using an adhesive that contains microwave heatable components. The adhesive is applied before or in the irradiation zone, and the adhesive is irradiated using microwaves. The adhesive is in powder or granulate form. The material (2) is passed through the irradiation zone (15) over rollers (8,9) and an advancing band (7). An upper press band (10) passes over the lower band. The adhesive and a further work material run together between the two bands.
