Emergency system for motor vehicles, has a driver monitoring system for detection of whether a driver is fit to drive and a control unit that triggers an emergency maneuver if the driver is recognized as unfit to drive. The control unit is combined with the driver assistance system that includes instrumentation for detection of the vehicle surroundings. Preferably an alerting telephone call is made, including details of the vehicle position.
