in a paper making process a web (12) of paper or carton passes at high speed through a coating drum (14) station (22). The coating station has an emergency-stop guillotine, a high-speed coolant release unit. The guillotine and coolant release are operated esp. following the occurrence of one or more of three conditions. The three conditions are an unplanned interruption or termination of normal coating station (10) operation. Alternatively or additionally the capping guillotine is activated and the web cut, or a break or tear is detected in the web. Following detection of one of these conditions a trigger unit (32) triggers coolant water jet discharge through an array of jets (54). Also claimed is a commensurate automatic operating process in which water is held under pressure in a tank ready for immediate discharge.
