Separation of an uncharged substance from a mixture containing a dissolved ionic polymer with a molecular weight of at least 1000 comprises contacting the mixture at a pressure of up to 100 bar with an inorganic solid membrane having a cationic or anionic functional layer with a pore size of 0.3-20 nm. An Independent claim is also included for a solid membrane based on an open-pore inorganic support whose pore size decreases from the inside to a functional surface which is a cationic or anionic ultra- or nanofiltration layer of inorganic material with a pore size of 0.3-20 nm. The membrane has a separation factor above 99% for separating an uncharged substance from a liquid mixture containing an ionic substance.
