The flux gate probe (1) extends through a hole in the center of a square mounting plate (12) made of plastics material. A switching plate (5) extends at right-angles to the mounting plate. A shield (2) surrounds the active measuring element. There are three passive coils (9-11) at right-angles to each other, mounted above the plastics plate and held on plastics support rods (13). A plug (3) and a wire (4) connect the flux gate probe to the switching plate and wires (6-8) connect the coils to the switching plate.
