A wood-based solid fuel substitute for wood pellets is prepared from mechanically chopped wood in which the wood splinters are 10-15 mm long, 5-8 mm wide, and further wood splinters with a maximum length of 2-5 mm. In addition the fuel incorporates less than 1% sawdust and less than 0.1% coarse particles. The fuel is pure non pre-treated coniferous wood from forest sources with less than 10% residual moisture. An independent claim is also included for the production of the wood fuel in which the raw wood is chopped, pre-sieved (preferably 10 mm) and dried. The pre-sieved particles are again sieved (preferably 6 mm) and further dried. The incoming raw wood comprises de-barked forest thinnings which have been dried for 6-24 months, or sawmill residues. The chopped and sieved wood residues are converted to wood pellets for central heating fuel.
