The device (1) has a light beam transmitter (3) and a receiver (4). Transmitted light beams are reflected at markers in the sensing area to the receiver as received light beams. An evaluation device (5) evaluates receiver signals. First markers form position markers that are part of a position measurement system and are detected to determine the relative position of the device in the position measurement system. Control markers are also provided whose detection causes generation of control signals.
