An apparatus for detecting biological contamination in liquids, uses a combined collector and detector system. The liquid is passed through one or more collector plates and an optical measuring system. The germs to be identified are bonded selectively (e.g. by antibodies) at the collector plates, to be measured by absorption, transmission, reflection or fluorescence. The background signal is suppressed by a reference cell.
