The system for positioning e.g. a towel rail (10) on a telescopic support tube (14) comprises a positioning ring (16) with a conical outer surface whose narrower end is upwards. A stop ring (32) with a corresponding inner surface fits on to this and has radial lugs which are deformed when the ring is fitted.
