Coating material, especially silicone, is applied to opposing sides of the strip by opposing rolls(20,21) between which the strip passes. Rolls are moved towards each other to exert the required pressure for a prescribed coating application and are maintained at this position. A desired coating application weight is realized by either: (a) coating both rolls with the fluid, especially silicone, and moving the rolls towards each other on both sides of the strip; or (b) coating one roll(20) and applying to one side of the strip using the second roll(21) as a counter roll, then coating the latter roll until the desired application weight is reached. Fluid coating material is applied onto the coating rolls by not less than 2, preferably 3 or 4 rolls(14,16,18;15,17,19). An independent claim is included for a coating applicator unit used in the process which has sets of rolls(12,13) on both sides of the material strip. Opposing final coating rolls of each set move relative to each other.
