A PVC film or PVC plasticized coating, particularly for the paper making industry, has a fluorine modified, barrier-like, stable surface having a surface tension to its polar component of 10-25 mN/m. An Independent claim is included for a process for the treatment of PVC film and PVC plasticized coatings by treatment in a continuous gas phase fluorination unit with a fluorine-nitrogen mixture containing 0.5-5.0 % fluorine at a rate of 5-70 m/minute.
