Wind gust prediction method in which the static air pressure and or wind direction is measured and it is determined if their values have altered significantly from preceding values. If this is the case, then measures are taken to switch the installation into a mode in which wind loading is reduced. The method is based on the knowledge that a change in air pressure or wind direction precedes a change in wind speed. An Independent claim is made for a wind energy installation with control means for setting a more gentle operating mode in response to a predicted gust speed increase.
