A rotating tool for precision machining of plastics, or materials containing plastics, has a ceramic cutting edge (2) with a cutting angle of 25 to 40 deg., and with the tool inclined at between 25 and 35 deg. The body of the cutting end of the tool is coated with a cutting raster (3) with pyramid shaped cutting elements set in a raster pattern. Suitable ceramics include zirconium oxide and silicon nitride or mixtures of ceramic materials. The cutting speed can be at least 60,000 rpm.
