The curtain coating applicator (12) to coat one or both surfaces of a moving paper or cardboard web, with a paste or liquid coating medium, forms a coating medium curtain (18) through gravity to fall directly from the applicator head on to the web surface or the surface of a transfer roller. Side guides (32), at the sides of the coating curtain, have jet openings (36) which deliver free jet streams (30) at the edges, with a faster speed than the coating curtain movement and guide the curtain edges.
