Device for determining the amount of sludge contained within a working fluid, especially the amount of oil sludge in hydraulic oil, has a dipstick (1) that is inserted into the fluid container. The dipstick is inserted to the bottom of the container into the sludge layer. On the stick surface is a indicator element (9) that optically indicates the level of the top surface of the sludge. The dipstick has a groove (7) is which a porous display element is placed. The inside of the stick is hollow so that a suction pressure can be applied which holds the indicator element in place and ensures the ingress of sludge and oil into the display element. Additional O-rings (15) also serve to hold the element in place. The different oil and sludge levels are indicated on the display element by different colors.
