Regenerating a particle filter (24) arranged in the exhaust gas channel (22) of an IC engine (10) comprises measuring the actual air mass stream fed to the engine acquired at the actual operating point to the air requirement to be expected of the engine, and regenerating the filter based on the deviation between the air mass stream and the air requirement. An Independent claim is also included for an alternative process for regenerating a particle filter arranged in the exhaust gas channel of an IC engine.
