The fuel injector (10) has a nozzle (12) having a nozzle shank (28) received in a nozzle support portion at the proximal end (15) of a tubular retainer (14). Injection holes are formed at the tip of the of the nozzle shank. The outer peripheral surface of the nozzle shank and the inner peripheral surface of the nozzle support portion are tapered with respect to a longitudinal axis to engage with each other.
