The machine has a placing station with transfer tool to take a cover (P) from a stack (S) and move it to the carton (26). A forming unit (19) is located between stack and carton, to fold down the edge of the cover. The unit has a contour stop (19a) pressed against the cover. A sterilization unit (15,17) and a drier (20) are also positioned between stack and carton, and the forming unit is located behind the sterilizer or integrated in it. The transfer tool has a rotating disc (12) with suction units (13) for the cover.
