The device includes a separating container (2) rotatable about a vertical rotational axis and an emptying opening (7) in the bottom for removing the solids and for removing the separated fluid. The separating phase and the emptying phase are controlled through speed. A speed range in the emptying phase is provided where the separated fluid runs out through the emptying opening through gravity. Switching points (16) beneath the emptying opening separate the emptied fluid from the solids which follow.
