A method for the production of hydroxyalkyl carboxylic acid esters by reacting carboxylic acids with alkylene oxides on a catalyst, in which the catalyst comprises iron(II), iron(III) or mixed iron(II)/iron(III) oxide on a solid support. An Independent claim is also included for a method for the production of catalysts for the above reaction, by coating an iron oxide or precursor thereof onto a support material, or mixing an iron oxide or precursor thereof with a precursor of the support material, and then forming to the required pellets and calcining at up to 800 degrees C in an atmosphere with an oxygen content of less than 1 vol%.
