Combined emergency vehicle and traffic light system in which emergency vehicles transmit directional radio beams that are detected by receivers mounted in traffic lights. When the emergency vehicle signals are received control of the lights is interrupted and they flash red, indicating to other drivers the approach of emergency vehicles so that they can take appropriate action.
