A lighting system for safety or direction in buildings, public vehicle stops or in vehicles, especially in emergency, comprises a bar-shaped light (1) with lamps (L) at either end and a broken or reflective inner surface (2) along part of its length which multi-reflects the light cones to produce a discrete emitted lighting sign.
