Carbonyl compounds are obtained from shorter-chain carbonyl compounds by a continuous aldolisation process in which at least one of the products is removed from the reaction mixture. A method for the production of carbonyl compounds of formula R1R2C(A)-CR3(B)-CO-R4 (I) by reaction of continuously-introduced carbonyl compounds of formula R1-CO-R2 (II) with continuously-introduced carbonyl compounds of formula R4-CO-R5 (III), in which the reaction is a continuous process and at least one of the products is removed from the reaction mixture.
