The housing for the vehicle differential drive (10) has bores (16) in its walls and may be made of a metal casting. The tool machines the spherical wall of the space for the differential gears. The tool has two cutters (30,30') with a coupling (26) between them. A drive spindle (46,46') on either side of the tool has a coaxial chuck or tool (56,56') holding a coupling (54) with a polygonal head (50) engaging in a hole (32) in each half of the tool.
