In a process to reduce automotive exhaust gas nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by oxidation, the exhaust system has a second exhaust gas treatment unit (25) operating in parallel with a first (20), both upstream of an assembly which oxidizes the NOx. The exhaust gases arrive through a single pipe to a junction with a diversion flap guiding the bases into one unit (20) or the other (25). The flap is moved by electrical or pneumatic power. The NOx is oxidized in an oxidation catalytic converter (20) or a plasma reactor (25). The plasma reactor is preceded by a fuel feed (35) inlet located after the diversion flap (30). The exhaust gas temperature and nitrogen content are measured by sensors (40, 45). An Independent claim is also included for a commensurate exhaust gas assembly.
