A thermal store, or heat sink, has a number of thermal storage elements (10) stacked into blocks separated by hollow heat exchanger plates (12) through which a thermal exchange fluid is ducted. The heat exchanger plates are in thermal contact with the heat storage blocks and are connected in series by a serpentine shaped ducting (14). This ensures that the fluid passes several storage blocks. The thermal transfer planes are parallel to each other and the system can be divided into sub units with parallel fluid flow connected to common inlet and outlet ports (22, 24).
