Mechanically compacted (especially extruded) washing or detergent agents or compounds containing organic polycarboxylic acids are characterized by (1) a non-water-soluble builder content of no more than 5 wt.%; and (2) a pH below 10.5 as a 1% solution of the agent in water. An Independent claim is also included for production of the agent by (1) preparing a pre-mix containing individual raw materials which are solid at room temperature and 1 bar and have a melting or softening temperature at least 45 degrees C optionally as well as up to 10 wt.% of nonionic surfactants which are liquid below 45 degrees C and at 1 bar; and (2) granulating the pre-mix by compacting at above 45degreesC and further processing and conditioning. This pre-mix contains at least one raw material or compound which is solid under 1 bar and at below 45 degrees C but which melts under processing conditions to form a polyfunctional water-soluble binder serving as a lubricant during production of the agent and also as an adhesive for the solid compounds in the agent, this adhesive having a disintegrating effect when the agent is dissolved in an aqueous bath.
