A camshaft for controlling the valves in an IC engine has an additional cam profile(3) for each cylinder with adjustable effect. The cam profile has a recessed mounting in the camshaft and is moved between an inoperative recessed position into an extended position by a radial drive. The dive comprises an axial control shaft (4) which engages the additional cams via sloping profiles, for a continuous adjustment. The additional cams can be used to vary the engine braking effect, to supplement the conventional brakes, e.g. on downhill runs. The additional cams are securely attached to the drives.
