Low pressure discharge lamp comprises a gas discharge vessel containing a noble gas filling as buffer gas and an indium halide, thallium halide and/or copper halide, electrodes and devices for producing and maintaining a low pressure gas discharge. The lamp further includes an electron emitter substance made from a mixture of BaO, SrO, CaO and MgO, in which the BaO is present in an amount of less than 1 weight %, SrO in an amount of less than 10 weight % and the sum of CaO and MgO is more than 90 weight %, where the amount of CaO in the CaO/MgO mixture is 10-90 weight %.
