Ophthalmic operating microscope has an illumination device for illumination of the eye with light the spectral selection, and or phase, and or polarization of which are selected so that it is reflected, absorbed or scattered in different manners from the interface layers between different media in the eye. The altered light is coupled out of the observation light path of a stereo microscope and evaluated with an evaluation unit to determine the type, shape and position of individual media and or interface layers. An electronically generated optical image is re-coupled into the observation beam path (2) using a projector (16).
