The device has a brake actuator and a unit for operating a brake cable controlled or regulated so that the trailer can be braked and stabilized by operating the wheel brakes depending on vehicle signals and detected instabilities of the trailer. The device is an electromagnetic brake with functional modules enabling braking of the trailer and for preventing excessive rotation about vertical and longitudinal trailer axes. The device has a brake actuator and an electrically controllable unit for operating a brake cable controlled or regulated by a brake and/or vehicle dynamics regulator so that the trailer (10) can be braked and stabilized by operating the wheel brakes (14,15) depending on vehicle signals and detected instabilities of the trailer. The device is in the form of an electromagnetic brake with at least one first associated functional module enabling braking of the trailer and second and third modules for preventing excessive rotation about the vertical and longitudinal trailer axes.
