Method for determining the travelling speed and or length of a chain-type band. The method employs two sensors (13, 14) placed at a fixed distance (y) from each other and at respective distances (X1, X2) from the chain. The distances vary with irregularities in the chain. The measurement method rests on detection of the same signal sequence by each sensor, with the temporal distance between the two detected sequences used to determine the band travel speed. An Independent claim is made for a device for determining the travelling speed and or length of a chain-type band.
