The device has a sensor for detecting the actual position of the lateral edge of the material near a final control element (130) for adjusting the edge position and a regulating device (172) that compares the actual position of the first sensor with a desired signal corresponding to a desired position for the lateral edge of the material and that drives the final control element to vary the position of the lateral edge in the event of a deviation.
