The hydrodynamic torque converter comprises a pump wheel (24), a rotatable turbine wheel (26), and a stator assembly (44). The stator assembly has a first section (46) with first stator blades (50), and a second stator section (54) axially in series with the first and with second stator blades (56). The second set of stator blades can be optionally rotationally fixed in relation to the first set of blades or can be allowed to rotate. A friction clutch unit (80) is provided through which a torque transmission coupling is created between a support element (48) of the first stator section and support element (58) of the second section.
