The overshoe (2) has a sole (4) which is flat in side view and in plan view is shaped like the sole of a regular shoe. The sole and heel of the normal shoe worn by the user rests on the sole of the overshoe. This is divided into front (8) and rear (6) regions connected together by a hinge (10) with a bolt or hinge pin (18) running across the width of the sole in the region of the ball of the foot. The ends of the hinge pin are connected to straps (14) on the edges of the sole. There is a cup (26) to accommodate the heel of the normal shoe and a fastening system (20) with adjustable (24) leather straps (22) passing over the upper of the normal shoe.
