An antagonist (I) of CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide), especially a nucleic acid, preferably one that binds to CGRP, is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) antagonist (Ia) of amylin that is a nucleic acid, preferably one that binds to amylin; (2) antagonist (Ib) of the CGRP or amylin receptors, preferably one that binds to a ligand of the receptor, particularly to CGRP or amylin; (3) nucleic acid (II) that binds to CGRP, amylin or an amyloid polypeptide; (4) complex of CGRP or amylin with a (I); (5) methods of screening for CGRP and amylin antagonists or agonists; and (6) kits, for detecting CGRP or amylin, containing (II).
