A rhenium containing catalyst on an oxide support, contains titanium dioxide having a sulfate content of no greater than 0.6 wt.% (with respect to TiO2) and a surface area of 10-400 m2/g. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of alcohols by catalytic hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds in the liquid phase using the catalyst.
