The axle transmission unit for a rail car is fitted with a spur gear unit at the input side and a bevel gear unit at the output side. The hypoid bevel gear (38, 40) is mounted in a particularly low position reducing the vertical distance (52, 56) between the wheel set axle (4) and the rotation axis (54) of the input shaft (2). The space (50) needed for the accommodation of the unit can be reduced regarding its vertical extension, facilitating a low positioning of the floor (48) of the vehicle.
