Chip card (1) has antenna (5) conductively connected with contact surface (4) by two contacts (3). Chip (2) is connected to contact surface (4) by contacts (3) and can transfer data via the contact surface (4) or via the antenna. When inserted into reader unit, data is read using contacts while antenna is deactivated by connecting both contacts (3) to short cut them. Independent claims included for 1) end unit/reader with contact unit for data carrier, deactivating antenna during contact data transfer 2) procedure for data transfer between portable data carrier and end unit
