Purifying sewage or other substances laden with harmful organic matter (I), comprising selective introduction of photosensitizers (II) in cells of (I), stimulation of (II) with light in a wavelength range stimulating release of singlet oxygen from (II), and destruction or disintegration of the (I) cells by the singlet oxygen or other radicals, is new. An Independent claim is also included for detergent or clarifying agent, especially for carrying out this process, which contains an acid-treated microbiotic mixed culture, preferably containing microorganisms that release photosensitizer, and a basic carrier material.
