The safety device (10) has a protection space (15) defined by a frame structure (14) in which the surgical instrument is at least partially inserted and provided by at least 2 frame sections (16,18), displaced relative to one another for opening and closing the protection space. The surgical instrument is inserted in the open protection space which is then closed, for enclosing the potentially dangerous parts of the instrument, e.g. the instrument blades.
