The adjusting device, for especially the inclination-variable seat back of a motor vehicle's seat, has a locking fitting (1) with teeth (11) and a locking pawl (13) with coinciding teeth (16). The set of teeth on the fitting and/or on the locking pawl has two rows of teeth tangentially offset in relation to each other and which in use are brought into alternate engagement with the reciprocal teeth on the locking pawl or fitting, depending upon the inclination of the seat back.
