The projection appliance (1) has an image generator (11) for representing an image at a reduced scale, an illumination unit (2) and a projection objective (12). An optical output coupling element (13) couples out part of the light from the illumination unit to illuminate the image generator. A sensor (15) measures the intensity of the light coupled out. A regulator regulates the intensity and/or color of the projected image according to the sensor signal.
