An automotive piston engine has a crankcase with a crankshaft which also turns a cog (16) via a spur pinion. The crankcase has a blow-by gas breather assembly (32) with an oil separator. The cog (16) esp. covers part of the oil breather so that the only aperture between the blow-by gases and ambient air is between the cog (16) teeth.
